Hungary makes absolutely amazing wines, but the bottles that get exported are often not the best representation. So while you're here, try some quality reds.
Above all, try Tokaji Aszú. It's not a gimmick but a true Hungarian product of fantastic quality. It's a dessert wine that isn't too sweet, with only 12 to 13% alcohol, and it's made partly from grapes affected by noble rot, which concentrates the sugars and flavors. It has acidity as well as sweetness, so it tastes bright rather than sticky, and it's perfect with dessert.
It was one of the favorite wines of Louis XIV, the Sun King, and of many other aristocrats. He supposedly called it “the wine of kings, the king of wines”.
