Pálinka is a fruit brandy, and its name is protected by the European Union as a geographical indication. It has to be made in Hungary, from Hungarian fruit and nothing else. Neighboring countries have their own versions, but Hungary probably has the widest selection of fruits: grape, plum, pear, peach, raspberry, blueberry, quince and many more.
Some pálinkas go as high as 70% alcohol, but the right one is a wonderfully delicate drink, so you know the rule: good ones you sip, bad ones you shoot.
Another drink you will meet sooner or later is Unicum. It's essentially a slightly more bitter Jägermeister. Hungarians love to drink it in combination with beer: a beer, then a shot of Unicum, then a beer, then a shot of Unicum, and you can imagine the result.
